In today’s fast-paced world, we are encouraged to push harder, go further; succeed at all costs. This leads to stress, anxiety, and worry. The result is “burnout.” We think we’re not good enough; we cannot cope with it all. Life is just too hard, and we start to doubt our abilities. Below you will find eight Bible verses that will instill in you a sense of peace and wellbeing and help you to move closer to knowing how to stop worrying.
8 Bible Verses on How to Stop Worrying
Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved. – Psalm 55:22
This verse encourages us to put our faith in the Lord; He will shoulder our troubles like a yoke around His neck, for it is written that His yoke is light (Matthew 11:28-29). He will take care of you in the time of your greatest need. He will not let you fall by the wayside of that arduous road you have embarked upon.
When all feels lost and it appears your friends have turned their backs on you, trust in His care. This is how to stop worrying about the future and what it might bring. He has strengthened you against all slings and arrows. Walk with confidence in the Lord. You will find peace with Him.
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. – Proverbs 12:25
When we worry, we become anxious and fearful of what might be around the next corner. Worry acts like a heavyweight on the soul and pulls you down into a dark corner. Just a smile or a kind word, even from a stranger, will lighten your spirits and make you realize life is not all gloom.
Count your blessings and make a conscious effort to choose to see the tumbler of life as half-full, not half-empty. Is this the answer to how to stop worrying? It is a way forward and change can happen when you acquire the right perspective.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:33-34
If you follow the Lord and believe in His righteous ways to do good, you will be blessed with the fruits of a life lived for God. It thus follows that your worries and fears will decrease as you unburden yourself and hand them over to Him. You cannot change anything by worrying about what might happen in the future – it might never happen!
You are then not trusting the Lord to be there and care for you. So, this trust in the Lord’s mercies is another way in how to stop worrying and take each day as it arrives, knowing the Lord is with you and will protect you always. He will not desert you in your hour of need.
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6
On first reading this, one might perceive that the Lord is showing a lack of concern for us in our present state of anxiety or worry. Not at all. He is telling us, those who genuinely believe, that we can pray directly to the Lord for help and guidance in our time here on earth. We should first thank Him for all He has done for us.
We realize that life is not worry-free. Additional help from those around us will be required more often than not. Prayer is the best way to solve the question of how to stop worrying from the believer’s viewpoint. This is as true for a loss of employment as it is for a broken relationship or marriage. Have faith and bring your worries to the Lord in prayer.
In my distress I called out to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, my cry came before Him, into His ears. – Psalm 18:6
This part of the Psalm is about the worry, fear, and distress David felt in his fight with Saul. He was figuratively flattened, on his back not knowing what to do. But he could look up! So, he prayed for deliverance and the Lord heard him. Likewise, we must pray to the Lord in our times of stress or need.
He will hear your pleas, alleviate your fears and you will learn this is how to stop worrying and lean on Him in your daily trials, like an old friend holding you up and supporting you when you have fallen. Life is like a battle at times, but with the Lord’s help, you will be victorious.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. – Isaiah 40:31
If ever there was a passage from the Bible that exhorts us to press onward, how to stop worrying and cast those worries and burdens on the Lord, then it is this one. To have such an injection of hope given to us is like getting a “second wind” during a race. Believing and trusting that the Lord will not let you down, but give you added strength to fight your daily battles is a balm for the soul.
There are days when your work schedules, family responsibilities, and other matters will leave you emotionally and physically drained. God never faints or gets fatigued. He understands your heart and your soul and will give you the strength to go on. Worrying will not add a single hour to your life, only sour the one in which you are living (Luke 12:24).
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. – Proverbs 31:25
Is this how we should behave? To laugh in the face of any adversity? Surely this is not the road a person should follow when taking advice on how to stop worrying? If a woman is a godly person, she sees through the traps and snares of the world; and is a blessing to her family for she loves the Lord with all her being.
Thus, she is filled with the goodness of Christ’s spirit and is free to take up her cross in the world. She is strong and proud, therefore finding comfort and not worrying about the future. She is still humble, so can “laugh at the days to come.” This is as true for a man as it is for a woman. It is the strength of mind that counts most to overcome your daily trials; it is how to overcome worry and face what lies ahead with dignity. Be strong in the Lord.
Let not your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. – John 14:1-3
Perhaps the greatest question in life is “where do I go when I die? Will it be heaven, or will it be hell?” The unbeliever has no qualms about the matter. An agnostic will tell you that you only have this life, so celebrate and do as you please. But even they will be beset by doubts and worry about what might become of their souls at death.
How to stop worrying over this question is difficult without the concrete knowledge that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. In Him is our salvation and hope for our own lives. We need not be troubled or distressed, for as we live out our own lives in obedience to God, we have eternity to look forward to with our savior.
What these verses teach us is how to stop worrying and let the Lord be in command of our lives. God never promised us a life free of woe, but we can lean on Him, pray to Him and He certainly promises that He will alleviate worry, fear, and anxiety in times of our greatest need. He is the way, the truth, and the life.
