Nicolle Maurer, MA, LMHC
Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate
(425) 477-4141 | nicollem@seattlechristiancounseling.com
I desire to create an environment where you can feel safe, seen, and valued for who you are as an individual made in the image of God. I view our time together as a chance to learn, play, risk, heal, and come away impacted by one another. I employ humor and playfulness in sessions when it is appropriate, but also feel very comfortable with intense feelings of anger and grief. I am not overwhelmed easily by big feelings, so I will invite you to bring those in with you to our sessions instead of leaving them at the proverbial door.
Online (WA only) – Mon, Wed, Thu & Fri
My Goal as a Christian Counselor
One of my goals as your counselor is to be fully human with you. I believe that’s the most therapeutic thing anyone can offer anyone else: their humanity. It’s courageous and vulnerable to give ourselves fully to others, but this is what I believe is some of the most important work we can possibly do in our lives. As a trusted mentor of mine states, “Therapy brings us right up to the core of who we are–it asks us to really look at ourselves, question ourselves, and ultimately embrace our many flaws and what makes us beautifully human.”
What I Offer in Christian Counseling
I am very client-centered as I believe even unconsciously, you know where you want to go in terms of bringing things to the surface. I will encourage you to trust your gut and listen to your body, knowing that our bodies hold memories and trauma from our entire lives. I believe good therapy takes time and I don’t think healing can be rushed, so it’s important to me to build the relationship between us. I invite you to disagree with me or let me know when I have misunderstood or provided unhelpful feedback, as my ego does not hang on being “right.” I am committed to the continual growth and understanding of you as you pursue your healing journey.
My Approach to Christian Counseling
In the midst of the fractured, complicated, and confusing world we live in, I believe that Jesus is still the Light and “in Him, there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). I’ve told many people that there is no way I could willingly engage in trauma work if I had no hope in the resurrection. Isaiah 61 is my “north star” in terms of how I view my vocation in counseling (“bind up the brokenhearted . . . to comfort all who mourn . . . to bestow on them a crown and beauty instead of ashes”). Drawing from the multi-faceted lens of neurobiology, trauma-informed care, connection to the Holy Spirit, and study of psychology, I see healing as multi-layered, non-linear, and communal yet also genuinely accessible for those who truly desire it.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Ministry with an emphasis in cross-cultural studies.
My Call to Christian Counseling
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of therapy and exploring the human mind and heart of another. I was on staff with a campus ministry at Penn State and realized that my favorite part of the job was meeting with people one-on-one. In the process of going deep with them, I started to encounter all kinds of struggles related with abuse, eating disorders, codependency, relational issues, past trauma, etc. I wanted to be more equipped to walk with people through those things and help them find healing in deep places of woundedness.
More About Me/On a Personal Note
I am a proud aunt of four nieces and two nephews. I live with my very goofy cat, Hauschka (aka Mr. Whiskers). I enjoy working out, cooking for people, playing guitar, singing, writing, reading, being outside, salsa dancing, and conversation around a fire. I have an interest in working with adoptees and adoptive parents because I was adopted. I’m also a pastor’s kid and missionary kid, so I understand the unique complexities involved with ministry.

Depression
The world can be an incredibly overwhelming place. We all have times and perhaps seasons when we feel overwhelmingly sad, stuck, or even numb. We can feel a lingering heartache that stays with us for much longer than anticipated. I would be honored to walk with you through whatever may be weighing you down and making your day-to-day life difficult. I can’t promise it will be easy, but I can be there with you in the darkness so you don’t have to walk it alone. Peeling back the layers takes time and care, and I will offer both of those things to you as you travel the path toward healing and hope.
Grief and Loss
Through Christian grief counseling, I will provide a space for you to tell your story of loss, whether it is a physical death, a betrayal, an unexpected transition, or the many other ways you may experience grief in your life. I firmly believe that grief and lament are holy ground and can be powerful times of shaping and transforming us. I believe we can only know joy to the degree we’re willing to open ourselves up to sorrow, which is why I am passionate about creating space for you to grieve and lament.
Sexual Abuse
It is indeed a sobering reality that sexual abuse can occur within seconds, and yet the effects insidiously last a lifetime. It can also take years for survivors to realize that what happened was indeed sexual abuse and name it accurately. I will walk with you through the confusion and anguish of being both a victim and a survivor of such trauma, while always bringing you back to a place of kindness and patience toward yourself and your body. Telling our stories of harm takes such courage and is part of the healing process. I would be honored to bear witness to yours.
Spiritual Development
Do you feel confused, anxious, overwhelmed, or even angry at God? I would love to walk with you through whatever you may be facing. I believe doubt and faith are not mutually exclusive, and it is healthy and normal to feel all kinds of emotions when in relationship with another person, even if (especially if) that person is God. I am constantly reading and learning to sharpen myself spiritually and theologically, and would love to connect with you regarding your spiritual health, should you desire to discuss it during our sessions.
Trauma
Tragically, we live in a broken world that is filled with trauma of all kinds. Our bodies were created to respond to situations of danger (think fight/flight/freeze), but sometimes these patterns can repeat themselves even after the danger has passed and we can get stuck. Often we try to comfort ourselves by saying, “It could’ve been worse,” or “At least it wasn’t as bad as such-and-such,” when in reality, we are just distancing ourselves from the very valid and legitimate trauma we have experienced. Whether your trauma has been primarily physical, emotional, mental, relational, or some other kind, I will partner with you to explore what occurred and work together on what you feel may be most helpful for your healing (likely a combination of somatic work and also narrative processing). Trauma does not need to have the last word for you.

“Nicolle Mauer is an excellent therapist. She takes time to fully understand the details of your personal journey and asks great questions to pull out more than you thought was there.
Often times I find we as humans get very sedentary with our opinions about ourselves and the relationships we are in. The great questions Nicolle asks, drive you to look at your situation from a new perspective as her kind and gentle guidance steers you towards breakthrough and health. She strikes the perfect balance between being non-judgmental and passionate for change.
I have grown tremendously through my interactions with Nicole and couldn’t speak more highly of her character, insight and vibrant advocacy for those in need.”

Nicolle asks important and insightful questions and she listens thoughtfully to my answers. She asks more questions and listens more, and she empathizes. Nicolle never leaves me emptied and barren – she timely opens doors of helpful – but not presumptuous- understanding for me to consider. Nicolle knows my thirst for biblical perspective and truth and she is deeply equipped with knowledge and skills to deliver this to me along with additional resources. I always feel heard, stirred to beneficial thought and growth, and cared for in my soul by her. I’m so thankful for her.
