Each day is an opportunity to move one step closer to where you want to be. My name is Susan Goertz, and I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families find empowerment, healing, and growth. As a family systems therapist, my hope is to nurture your strengths, build lasting and meaningful relationships, and grow in newness through faith and the grace of God. With a focus on each and every individual, I will offer you a place of real compassion and warmth while developing sessions based on your needs as they evolve during our time together. If you struggle with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, loss, or issues of aging, I offer you real and meaningful solutions that will provide relief now and will help you continue to grow in the future.

My Goal as a Christian Counselor

When I think about my goals as a Christian counselor, the scripture from Luke 4:18 comes to mind: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s Favor.” My hope is for my clients to feel genuinely cared for, heard, and empowered to make positive change. But most importantly, my ultimate goal is to encourage my clients to walk in freedom through Christ. Whether dealing with past mistakes, dysfunctional family patterns, trauma, or negative self-perceptions — I want each person to discover the peace, healing, and newness that only the Lord can provide. Being a part of that journey is an amazing gift and reward, and I do all I can to help each person discover what the grace of God can do for them.

What I Offer in Christian Counseling

The heart of what I offer through Christian counseling is hope for restoring each client’s identity and acceptance in Christ. I provide people a safe place to work through difficulties without fear of judgement or condemnation. I believe that all people are made in the image of God and have the potential to be redeemed through Christ. As your Christian counselor, I offer you a partner who will journey with you on your path of connection with yourself, loved ones, and with Jesus, so you can build a vibrant life that is full of the unique gifts and callings God has for you. Counseling is a process that can take time, but I strive to use methods that offer both long-term solutions and immediate relief for your current situation.

My Approach to Christian Counseling

My approach to Christian counseling is based on genuine care and empathy for the struggles and needs of each individual. Because each person is unique, made by their own personal experiences, inner battles, and desires for what a complete life means for them, I find that creating a client-focused approach is most beneficial. When you come to me, I take a real interest in your life story, and I will work with you to address your goals. By providing an objective voice in the midst of what might feel like a chaotic situation, we will work together to address your needs. When working with couples and families, I consider the family as a whole, made of individual parts that work together to form a working, healthy unit. With this well-rounded approach, each person is heard, and everyone will learn how to come together to overcome dysfunctional patterns of interaction as a family.

Qualifications and Experience

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, specializing in Christian counseling for couples, families, and individuals who struggle with problems related to conflict, grief and loss, anxiety, trauma, issues of aging, and more. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration and a Master of Science in Human Environmental Science with a focus on Marriage and Family Therapy. I’m also trained in EMDR, a trauma-focused therapy. With over 11 years working in the field of counseling, I have had the opportunity to work with people from a wide-variety of backgrounds and settings. My experience includes working in a free mental health clinic in a rural high-poverty area, a day program serving low-income adult clients with severe mental illness, and in private practice setting where I worked with children and teens in the context of their families, individuals, couples, and families.

My Call to Christian Counseling

Before I became a Christian counselor, my life was devoted to twenty years of child rearing while working in finance. During this time, my family experienced difficulty, and we sought family counseling to help us work through these issues together. This experience was so rewarding that it awakened a desire within myself that soon fueled a life-changing decision: I decided to become a Marriage and Family Therapist — and this was the best decision of my life! Looking back over my life, I became even more sure that this was the path God had chosen for me. As a child, I saw members of my family labeled with mental illness without considering how the interactions within the family unit impacted this person. When exposed to the idea of counseling based on a family-systems approach, I was sold on the idea, and I continue to use that insight today. Combined with a life rich in experience, both in the trials of this world and in the wonderful healing grace of Jesus Christ, I see Christian counseling as my true calling — one that continues to enrich my life and my own personal walk with the Lord.

More About Me

The Lord has been very gracious to me and my family. I have been blessed with 32 years of marriage, four children and five grandchildren. When I’m not working, I love to spend time outdoors hiking, biking, and exploring God’s beautiful creation. I also love to cook, read, and go on traveling adventures with my husband.

Trauma

If you lived through a traumatic experience such as a natural disaster, sexual assault, abuse, military combat, or infidelity, I can help you find real healing and peace through experienced counseling psychology and faith in Christ. Through faith, prayer, bible study, and trauma-focused therapy, you can move past fear, depression, and isolation towards a life that is full of meaningful relationships, happiness, and growth. Though trauma counseling is a process, I offer tools that provide a measure of relief in the early stages of therapy, so you can begin to find the peace you need.

Loss and Bereavement

If you suffered a loss and find yourself stuck in grief, or if you just need a little extra support for dealing with the many emotions and questions you carry, I am here to help. Loss comes in many forms, ranging from lost loved ones, to lost relationships, decreased health and physical ability, and lost dreams. No matter what you experience, I will help you work through grief at your own pace and in your own way, while offering tools for dealing with strong and painful emotions in ways that are healthy while helping you connect with new meaning and joy in your life.

Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common issues people face, and it can be very disruptive to many areas of a person’s life. If you struggle with general feelings of stress, panic attacks, social anxiety, obsessive or racing thoughts, or any other issue that leaves you feeling overwhelmed, detached from others, and unable to live fully, I can help you find lasting solutions. I have successfully treated clients using proven counseling methods for overcoming undesired or unhealthy thoughts, urges, and memories. Together we will work towards creating a life of peace, strength, and wholeness in Christ.

Geriatric Counseling

There are many times of transition in our lives, and sometimes it helps to have someone who will compassionately help us move through these times with peace, acceptance, and hope. I especially love working with people who struggle with issues of aging including transitioning through retirement, dealing with changes in our personal and spiritual relationships, working through loss and bereavement, and much more. I find this area of counseling very rewarding, and often learn and grow as much as my clients during our time together.

Susan Goertz was absolutely wonderful. My boyfriend and I saw her for premarital counseling. Susan has a very calming presence and genuinely cares about her clients.

Jasmine Johnson

Greg Evans

Having known Susan for over 10 years as both a colleague and friend, I can attest to her clear gifting in the treatment of individuals and families. I would not be able to enumerate the important skills i have gleaned from simple conversations with Susan. I have witnessed her passion for treatment in various settings, be it assisting and leading at State Board levels, or in the intimate therapeutic setting with distressed families. Few therapists possess and fewer demonstrate empathy and compassion needed to create the clinical relationship Susan is capable of. I have and will continue to steer clients to this incredibly valuable resource.

Susan was extremely sweet and upfront to making sure her coaching was what I expected to get out of it. Talking about my specific personality traits was interesting to learn about and Susan’s Christian background made me feel comfortable knowing she had the same values/morals as me. I had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend! She’s the BEST!
